Frequently Asked Questions

How Does It Works

There are two main types of Cryotherapy — localized and whole body.
The localized procedure is usually used by medical professionals called cryosurgery.
Cryosurgery works by killing undesirable cells in the body using freezing temperatures.
Using specific gases like liquid nitrogen or argon gas medical professionals apply the gas directly onto the skin for short periods of time. The extreme temperature kills the diseased cells by effectively burning them off. Overall it has been in use for at least 300 years. The current methodologies that we know and use today have been around for about 100 years. Specifically the use of liquid nitrogen gas has been in use since the early 20th century.

What is Whole Body Cryotherapy?

“Whole Body Cryotherapy” or WBC originated in Japan in the 1970s. It has also been used to treat weight loss and help with a list of health issues. The person goes into a cryo chamber where freezing gas surrounds his or her body for up to three or four minutes.
The freezing cold temperature is said to help the person recover from injury and heals the body from a number of ailments.
It has become the most popular activity for sports people wanting to recover from sports injuries so they can continue to compete at high levels.

Is Safe To Use?

There has only been one publicized fatality in the industry due to an unattended treatment session.
This accident is the only documented cryotherapy death thus far.
Standard procedure at all US spas offering cryotherapy treatments require sessions to be attended by a person knowledgeable in the technology.

Is Used in Sports?

Cryotherapy in sports usually refers to Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC) where the athlete goes to a spa and gets into a chamber where freezing cold gases are pumped into the enclosure for up to 4 minutes. Cryotherapy in sports has gained popularity in recent years as a way to treat injuries and speed up the healing process.

What is The Procedure?

Cryotherapy procedure for spas prepares you for a safe and positive experience.
Once you go to your spa, you will be greeted and asked to read some general information about the treatment.
Then you’ll be asked to complete and sign a waiver form before you start the treatment.
After this you’ll receive socks, slippers and protective gloves for your extremities.
You will be escorted into the room with the cryotherapy chamber and once everything is ready the gas will be turned on and fill the chamber area. Only your lower body below your neck will be immersed with the gas to rapidly cool your body.
After 2-4 minutes your session will be complete.

Why is it used for Weight Loss?

The concept is that when you go into a cold chamber of -200 degrees F for up to 4 minutes, your body goes into survival mode and this will super-energize your metabolic rate thus burning up to 800 kcal of energy.
The reality is when you combine cryotherapy with a steady workout plan and a balanced diet, weight loss can occur as you increase your metabolism and blood circulation.
